http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20110417.mp3
First Jesus dined with sinners, then He didn't fast with the religious. It seems He didn't understand at all how to be religious. He explained it by saying "You don't put a new patch on old cloth, or new wine in an old wineskin." Don't try to make Christianity work like a religion - it won't fit.

http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20110320.mp3
The obvious thing to do when looking for people to do “Christian work” is to go where Christians congregate – especially where they might be training for ministry. Instead, Jesus sought out working men. He wasn’t seeking religious leaders, but hard-working followers.

Look At Me
http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20110213.mp3
Jesus reveals something unsettling when He quotes Deuteronomy to refute the devil. On one level, He is saying He will not worship Satan. On another, He is saying He will not set Himself in the place of worship, either. The greatest idol we need to fear is ourselves.

What's Wrong with Bread
http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20110206.mp3
Jesus has fasted 40 days, and is hungry. He has the ability to turn stones into bread. Why not do it? What makes it wrong. We find Satan can be very subtle; and we learn as much from the passage surrounding Jesus’ answer (Deut 8) as from the part He quoted.

If we didn’t know God knew the beginning from the end, we might call this back to the drawing board. If You Could Only Tell One Person
http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20101219.mp3
There is lots of speculation over why, out of all the people in and around Bethlehem, God sent the angels to shepherds. The normal explanation is that Jesus was sent for the common man, for every man. That’s probably correct. But there’s another explanation that is also true: the shepherds were the best people the angels could have given the message to. We know that, because God doesn’t make mistakes.

Before starting in Luke, I plan to do a short series on significant words from the Bible. Examples are: Called, Foreknowledge, Sanctification, Justification, Redemption. These words can feel oppressive when we hear them, but each reveals a powerful theological truth; and as they are originally given, are a source of confidence and joy. This week we will start with Predestination.

It's Not About You
http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20100718.mp3
The writer of Hebrews is beginning to wrap up his message. The list of actions/attitudes we find in these six verses seems miscellaneous, but there is a common factor – each requires a focus on the good of someone else, rather than ourselves. This passage demonstrates some practical things we do that show we are not just living for ourselves.

The Joys and Sorrows of Discipline
http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20100613.mp3
For some odd reason, people don’t seem to believe God punishes sin. Scripture teaches very clearly that He does, both in this world and the next. Today’s passage teaches very clearly that if God loves you, He disciplines you. This is a lesson for us when we undergo God’s discipline, and also sets the pattern for us. Parents who love their children discipline them.

The Burdens We Bear
http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20100523.mp3
Usually, when we think of the burdens we have to bear, we think of problems we have to put up with. They might be physical, emotional, relational, or addictions. Aside from addictions, none of these fit the burden described in Hebrews 12:1, where we are told to lay aside every encumbrance (burden), and the sin that so easily entangles us so we can run the race set before us. This burden is made up of the things we choose to hang on to. We find ourselves running while hitched to a sled full of all the things we refuse to leave behind.

The Israelites fled Egypt, but it was one of the most victorious flights ever made. While they walked in faith, that is. Immature Faith, but Still Faith
http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20100321.mp3
When Moses killed an Egyptian for beating a Hebrew, he took a side. It was the right side, but he did it badly. It's interesting to consider that we can both act on faith and do the wrong thing. There is a good lesson for us in Moses' act of faith and the price he paid for it.

The Courage to be a Parent
http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20100307.mp3
This is the story of parents who risked everything to protect their child. Egypt was imposing something much like China’s “One-child” policy, and they had the will to enforce it and the lack of respect for human life to carry through their threats. Moses’ parents when to extreme lengths to protect the infant boy they loved. And as they say, who knows, someday he might grow up to be someone important.

A Dead Man Tells a Tale
http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20100228.mp3
Before he died, Joseph made his brothers promise to take his bones with them when they left Egypt. 400 years later, when they left, they took his bones with them. One thing this shows is that even though Joseph lived and ruled hin Egypt, his heart was in the Promised Land. Another thing it shows is his confidence in God's promise. Perhaps the most important thing it did was give the Israelite people a memorial - it was a statement before, during and after their enslavement that God would deliver His people.

In Genesis 4, God says, “The voice of your brother’s blood is crying out to Me from the ground.” Hebrews 11:4 says “through faith, though he is dead, he still speaks.” What is it the blood of Abel says? The Reason For It All 12-20-09 Sermon
http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20091220.mp3
We say, “Jesus is the reason for the season,” and we find great meaning in the saying. What we may not realize is how far we fall short of the truth. In Colossians 1 we find these statements: “to the kingdom of His beloved Son” (v.13), “through Him and for Him” (v.16), “so that He Himself will come to have first place” (v. 18), “to reconcile all things to Himself” (v.20). He is much more than the reason for the season, He is the reason for everything. The more we see this, the more we will appreciate and worship Him.

“If you can’t turn your faith into the vernacular, then either you don’t understand it, or you don’t believe it.” (C.S. http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20091101.mp3
Hebrews 10:31 says, “It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God.” I’m not too sure this passage is written to describe non-believers. 1 Corinthians 3 describes believers escaping into heaven as those escaping from a fire, which will test our works. Many believers need to learn the fear of the Lord if they are going to live life with any assurance.

What Earth Sees of Heaven's Tabernacle, 09-13-09 Sermon
http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20090913.mp3
The tabernacle was a wonderful picture of the saving work of Christ. It was later replaced by the temple, following a similar design and made for the same purpose. Both have ceased to exist, subject to the ruin of sin and decay. The true tabernacle in heaven, the one they were patterned after, continues to exist, and always will. Even it, though, is empty and meaningless without Jesus. He is the One who gives the glorious its glory..

The Law: Not Revised, but Replaced, 08-23-09 Sermon
http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20090823.mp3
I met a man the other day who claimed to be a born again Israelite, who believed Christians should follow the Old Testament rules based on Matthew 5:17-19. He did not understand at all that Jesus, in fulfilling the Law for us, gave us something better. Today’s passage describes what Jesus did for us this way: “For, on the one hand, there is a setting aside of a former commandment because of its weakness and uselessness…, and on the other hand there is a bringing of a better hope, through which we draw near to God.” The Old Testament Law, in its perfection, condemns us. In Jesus Christ we are saved.

The Best of the Old is a Picture of the New, 08-09-09 Sermon
http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20090809.mp3
Abraham is the father of the faithful, both Jews and Gentiles (Romans 4). For this reason he is pivotal in Scripture; one of the most important people in the Bible. But who did Abraham honor as greater than he? The answer is Melchizedek, the priest-king of Salem. His name means “King of Righteousness,” his title means “King of Peace.” He blessed Abraham and Abraham honored him. Melchizedek is a type of Christ, and Jesus renews his priesthood, which is superior to the Levitical priesthood. In this priesthood we have basis for real hope.

Convinced of Better Things, 08-02-09 Sermon
http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20090802.mp3
After giving a stern warning to the Hebrews about those who fall away, the writer appears to do a complete about face when he says, “But, beloved, we are convinced of better things concerning you.” This is not just wishful thinking. In the passage we cover today, he gives two reasons for his confidence. First the demonstration of faith given by the very people he is writing to; second is His confidence that God keeps His promises.

If You Turn Your Back on God..., 07-26-09 Sermon
http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20090726.mp3
This is another of those passages in Hebrews that causes many to think the Bible teaches loss of salvation. I do not believe it does, and will answer that from Jesus’ parable of the soils and 1 Corinthians 3:10-15. Why was it written then? As a shame and a spur to those who make light of their salvation and live fruitless lives.

Talking with the Grown-Ups, 07-19-09 Sermon
http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20090719.mp3
“Wah-wah wah wah wah wah.” Most of us are familiar with how the Charlie Brown kids hear adult talk. The adults are speaking, but the kids don’t get it. Whose fault is that? Is it because the kids aren’t interested, or because the adults are speaking over their heads? The writer of Hebrews addresses his readers as people who ought to be able to speak with the grown-ups, but instead he needs to address them as children. You will never hear more than what your level of interest allows you to hear. If you are not growing in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (2 Pet 3:18), the fault does not lie with the Word of God or with the teachers and preachers, it lies with you. It is time to leave the elementary teaching about Christ and press on to maturity.

Crisis of Faith, 07-12-09 Sermon

Six times He remains patient with them answering their charge and proving Himself faithful despite their unfaithfulness.

An Undying Priesthood, 07-05-09 Sermon
http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20090705.mp3
Jesus is not only our Great High Priest, but He is priest of a different order. The Old Testament teaches the Levitical priesthood, but also hints at something better, the order of Melchizedek. Melchizedek is without genealogy, without beginning, and without end. And Scripture clearly implies his priesthood was superior.

http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20090628.mp3
If we were to consider all the implications of the words “Great High Priest,” some of them would be terrifying. But the application the Bible gives us is wonderful! “let us come boldly to the throne or grace.” This does not allow for arrogance or a casual nature, but allows us to “obtain mercy and find grace to help in our time of need.”

A Father at the Cross, 06-21-09 Sermon
http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20090621.mp3
The Gospel of John doesn’t mention Simon of Cyrene; in fact, John tells us Jesus went out bearing His own cross. Matthew, Mark and Luke all tell us that Simon of Cyrene, coming in from the country, was compelled to bear the cross. From this we deduce Jesus carried His own cross for a while, but He was too weak to make it. Mark adds the detail that Simon of Cyrene was the father of Alexander and Rufus. “He was their father?” someone might ask, “No wonder they’re so faithful.” This message will explore what might have happened to Simon at the cross, and the difference it made to his children.

Too Sharp to Play With, 06-14-09 Sermon
http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20090614.mp3
This is an awesome passage on the ability of Scripture to speak to the very core of our being. It reveals things we didn’t even know about ourselves, and leaves no room for hypocrisy or only playing with religion. There’s a contextual challenge with this passage, though. Just read the preceding passage and ask yourself, “Where did this come from?” This statement seems to come out of the blue, yet the author (and God) obviously felt it belongs exactly where it is. I think the answer is in the author’s repeated quotations of scripture; especially as he has three times quoted Psalm 95:7-8, “Today if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts…” Then, in 4:2 it says, “The message they heard was of no value to them, because those who heard it did not combine it with faith.” We can play games with God’s Word, but God’s Word does not play games with us. The truth of how we respond to it is made plain, and we cannot hide from it.

Falling Short of the Sabbath, 06-07-09 Sermon
http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20090607.mp3
The subject of the Sabbath is one that brings great confusion and guilt to many Christians. Should we worship on Saturday? Is Sunday the Sabbath? Is the Sabbath a part of the Law we should obey? Is it a principle that endures? There is some value in these questions, but mostly they miss the mark. Hebrews Four teaches that we enter God’s rest through faith. For the Christian, the Sabbath is not a day, but a life lived free of works that earn salvation.

God Wants to Give You Rest, 05-31-09 Sermon
http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20090531.mp3
There is rest for us, if only we will trust God. If we don’t trust Him, though, there is no rest, because we work as if everything depends on us. Our example is the Israelites, who could have entered the Promised Land, if only they trusted God. Because they didn’t trust Him, they spent their lives in aimless and unprofitable wandering, finding no place of rest.

Partakers of a Heavenly Calling, 05-24-09 Sermon
http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20090524.mp3
If you have accepted Christ as your Savior, what does that give you? Lots of things, but let me rephrase that just a little: what do you partake of? Again there are lots of things, but today’s passage names something specific: you are partaker of a heavenly calling. Your calling is what you are called to do, who you are called to be. We are called partakers of a heavenly calling, then told to consider Jesus, meaning He is the model of the life we are called to live. He is compared then to Moses. Moses was faithful as a servant, but Jesus was faithful as a Son. We are called to model ourselves after the Son.

The Messiah's Mother, 05-10-09 Sermon
http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20090510.mp3
Of course, the relationship between Jesus and Mary is unique, but Mary was still His mother, and He was still her son. On this Mothers Day, we will take a quick look at the life of Jesus as seen through the eyes of Mary. For all the attention she gets, the Bible says surprisingly little about Mary. After the stories of His birth and childhood, we find Mary at the wedding in Cana, where Jesus performed His first miracle. The next time we find her after that, she is coming with His brothers to take charge of Jesus, because they think He is mad. We find her again at the cross; and then finally in the upper room. I’ve divided these events into categories, calling them Mary’s treasures, Mary’s trials, Mary’s tragedy, and Mary’s triumph. We’ll try today to look at Jesus through Mary’s eyes, and maybe learn to appreciate Him even more.

Daring to Ignore the Son, 05-03-09 Sermon
http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20090503.mp3
This is the first of the serious warnings of Hebrews. How shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? If the word given through angels was binding, how much more binding was the word given through the Son? THis is a warning to all who take Jesus Christ lightly, who drift away, who don't think salvation is a big deal. It was a warning to the church then, and a warning to the church today.

http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20090426.mp3
What is the relationship between Jesus and angels. Between angels and us? Missing the Point, 04-12-09 Sermon
http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20090412.mp3
From Enoch to Lazarus, the Bible is full of occasions where God proves He is soverign over even death. Why then were the friens of Jesus so slow to understand His words and believe in His resurrection? I think the anser is that some things are easy to believe in theory, but hard to believe in practice. Faith in Jesus is putting faith in His resurrection into practice.

Foolishly Raising the Dead, 03-22-09 Sermon
http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20090322.mp3
When Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, it should have settled all doubt about His identity. Instead it sealed His fate. His opponents were not interested in what was true, but what was expedient. If Jesus had only been more sensitive to their feelings, He might have dealt with Lazarus differently (I hope you see the sarcasm there). This sermon will explore the political landscape surrounding Lazarus being raised from the dead. What Jesus did was politically foolish; and directly contributed to His crucifixion that followed shortly after.

T&T: Trials and Tribulations, 01-11-09 Sermon
http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20090111.mp3
Revelation 2:8-11, The Church in Smyrna. It looks like everything is going wrong for this persecuted church, but God finds nothing wrong with them. Interestingly, He doesn’t even say what they’re doing right; He just asks them to remain faithful. This is an important message for us when we face trials of our own.

The Frozen Chosen, 01-04-09 Sermon
http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20090104.mp3
Revelation 2:1-7, The Church in Ephesus. We will start the New Year with a look at the seven churches of Revelation. These churches present a composite picture of the strengths and weaknesses of various churches as seen through the eyes of Christ. The first church, that of Ephesus, did all the right things, but had lost its first love. Christ is pleased with their perseverance, but calls them to repent and return to their first love.

Make A Difference, 12-28-08 Sermon
http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20081228.mp3
Many people try very hard to win at life, but they don’t understand the prize, and they’re playing the wrong game. You don’t win by taking care of yourself; you win by making a difference for God. This is a message about New Year’s resolutions. It is not about trying harder, but aiming better, so that we can make a difference that matters.

Unscripted Christmas 12-07-08 Sermon
http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20081207.mp3
When the angel told Mary she would bear God’s Son, she asked, “How can this be?” When she told Joseph, he didn’t believe her. It’s almost as if they didn’t understand what was going on. Yet this was God’s plan, they acted faithfully, and it all worked out. This Christmas the messages will approach Christmas looking at how it worked with people who didn’t know how it was supposed to work.

We Start with the Heart 11-30-08 Sermon
http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20081130.mp3
Money given for God should not be an issue of amount, but of the heart behind it. We find these people were giving because their hearts were stirred and their spirits were moved; and they gave so much, Moses finally had to tell them to stop. We should desire hearts and spirits moved like this.

A Lesson on Intercession 11-23-08 Sermon
http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20081123.mp3
These chapters show the continuing interactions between God and Moses over the sin of the Israelites and what to do about it. A powerful lesson that comes through is that prayer changes things; but few of us pray as Moses prayed.

And the Golden Calf 11-16-09-08
http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20081116.mp3
While Moses was on the mountain, receiving plans for the tabernacle, the people below lost faith and made a gold calf. Sometimes belief in God is hard, and we are tempted to place our faith in something else. Whatever that may be, it is less than God, and a foolish choice.

God’s Holy Tabernacle 11-09-08 Sermon
http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20081109.mp3
Like everything else in this context, the tabernacle itself is highly symbolic. The tabernacle represented the house of God, His presence in the midst of Israel. It kept Him approachable and present, yet excluded them if they did not come to Him rightly.

Symbolic Clothing of the Priest 11-02-08
http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20081102.mp3
As high priest, Aaron presented the people before God. This was symbolized by the clothing he wore while ministering. What Aaron did symbolically, Jesus accomplished in power.

The Incense of the Altar 10-26-08 Sermon
http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20081027.mp3
Psalm 141:2-3 and Revelation 8:3-4 describe our prayer as rising up as incense before the throne of God. This is more than just a prayer list, it is worship; and it enables us to enter into the presence of God.

The Table of Showbread 10-19-08 Sermon
http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20081019.mp3
Everything inside the tabernacle is gold. The tabernacle itself is finely twisted linen and blue and purple and scarlet material with cherubim designs. But what’s this on the table? Bread!? The bread represents our works. They’re not much, but they are what we have to offer; and as out of place as they may seem, the table would be empty without them. Our works are important in the worship of God.

The Bronze Altar
Sun, 05 Dec 2008 13:12:44 PST

The Bronze Altar, 9-28-08 Sermon
http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20080928.mp3
The bronze altar is where sacrifices were made for sin, allowing the priest to approach the holy place. Unlike the ark, lampstand, and table of showbread, it is not made of or covered with gold, but with bronze. Bronze signifies judgment (consider the bronze serpent lifted up in the wilderness, Num 21:6 – 9). This sermon will look at the price of our sin, represented by the bronze altar.

If We Are Faithless, He Remains Faithful, 7-27-08 Sermon
http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20080727.mp3
God offered the people a conditional relationship: “if you will indeed obey…then you shall be My own possession…” and they responded, “All the LORD has spoken we will do.” They should have pleaded for mercy, instead. In three months of wandering, they’ve denied Him repeatedly. The good news is we don’t rely on our own faithfulness, but on God’s. Exodus 19:1-25

The Battle Belongs to The Lord, 7-13-08 Sermon
http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20080713.mp3
Moses is on the mountain, the battle is on the field. But the battle on the field was won by what went on at the mountain. We are in the battle, to be sure; but the battle is won or lost by prayer. Exodus 17:8-16

Grumbling About God's Provision, 7-06-08 Sermon
http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20080706.mp3
They grumbled about being thirsty, they grumbled about manna, they grumbled about meat, they grumbled about being thirsty AGAIN! We underestimate the sin of grumbling, but we find God reacted pretty strongly. This sermon will look at some situations where the people grumbled, explore what makes grumbling so bad, and encourage us to seek God’s will and be content with what He gives us.

No Way Out but God, 6-29-08 Sermon
http://www.tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20080629.mp3
As much as God did to deliver the Israelites, they quickly doubted Him when they felt trapped at the Red Sea. What they didn’t know is that what looked like a trap to them was His means of deliverance. If we really trust Him, we trust Him when we can’t see a solution. Exodus 13:17 - 15:21

Passed Over by Death, 6-8-2008 Sermon
http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20080608.mp3
Scripture Reading: John 1:29 Do we hear the word “Passover” and not realize it means someone or something was passed over? Unlike all the other plagues, there was an extra requirement to miss the plague of death – you had to be protected by the blood of the passover lamb.

Shaking Your Fist at God, 6-1-08 Sermon
http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20080601.mp3
Exodus 7-12 How much revelation can you receive and still refuse to acknowledge God? 2 Thess 2 refers to God “giving them over” to delusions because they won’t receive the truth. Revelation mentions those who curse God; acknowledging Him and denying Him at the same time. Pharaoh is evidence that what the world will see then is really nothing new.

Choosing the Familiar Over the True, 05-25-08 Sermon
http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20080525.mp3
Scripture Reading: Romans 1:18-23 In this message, we’ll look at the first three plagues – two of which Pharaoh’s magicians were able to duplicate; and one which they tried but failed. At this point they were convinced, but Pharaoh was not. Why would someone choose badly in spite of compelling evidence? But that’s what Pharaoh repeatedly did.

Placing Blame for Pharaoh's Hard Heart, 05-18-08 Sermon
http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20080518.mp3
Exodus 4:21 This is one of the difficult questions of Scripture: If God hardened Pharaoh’s heart, how can God condemn Pharaoh for having a hard heart? This seems manifestly unfair. In this message, we will try to deal with this difficult question.

Praying for Your Kids, Mothers Day Sermon
http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20080511.mp3
Every mother wants what is best for her kids. She works for them, sacrifices for them, and trains them. She wants only the best for them. Ultimately, every woman falls short of the ability to deliver all this. This is where prayer comes in. Scripture Reading: 2 Tim 3:13-15

http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20080217.mp3
"Our mission is to proclaim the Word of God, leading people to a saving faith and a growing relationship with Jesus Christ." It is a line in the sand in at least two senses. First, because we have set before us a challenge, and chosen our side. Second, recognizing lines drawn in the sand do not remain visible, we must consciously recommit that we remain on that side.

The Fears of a Godly Man 01-13-08 Sermon
http://tbfdavenport.org/audio/tbf20080113.mp3
We all know what it means to be afraid. Often we find we have been afraid needlessly. One of the things we should fear is that we act in fear of the wrong things. Paul, who is not afraid of weakness, insults, distresses, persecutions and difficulties is afraid that he might not be successful in his work with the Corinthians. He is an example to us of someone who feared the right things.
